"THANK YOU WB... For delaying this mess!" 2009-09-07
By Neo
WB has apparently decided to delay this, no doubt to release the theatrical cuts and extended cuts in one release via seamless branching. That's the right thing to do. Anything else is unfair to us as consumers. I'm glad they seem to be on their way to making the right kind of release these films deserve. It will be worth the wait!

 "Bad joke" 2009-09-05
By Leos Golasovsky
I don't understand what are they trying to accomplish here. I have dvd extended versions and will most ceirtanly not buy thearetical version even though on blu-ray. Letting us wait 2 more years for extended seems to me like a commercial provocation.

"Wait until the Extended Edition!" 2009-09-04
By Greg Math/Econ Fan (Seattle, WA United States)
For most Lord of the Rings fans, the extended edition will be the only way to go! Why not wait and give the studio the middle finger for trying to trick us out of our money by releasing a theatrical version separately! There's no reason that they can't release an extended version with a theatrical version option on the same disks!

"Retired - Can't afford studios jerking me around on multiple versions" 2009-09-04
By Rick (East Hanover, NJ USA)
I've never reviewed a movie before its release, so this is a first for me. I'm not even reviewing the movie, just the version.

I'm retired, and watching (and buying) favorite movies is an enjoyable pastime. But, having bought-for example-the first few Harry Potter movies on DVD, and then re-purchasing them on Blu-Ray pushed me near my limit of tolerance and of spending.

I'll probably watch the BR version of LOTR, but guess what, WB. I'll get them from Netflix, not provide you with another $10-$20 profit you would have made from a sale. If I'm still around when the extended set comes out, I might buy it then...

...or I might not. I'm seriously wondering if I should by any more DVDs or BRs at all. I seldom get the urge to watch a movie I own "right now." Given that, it's a far better value proposition to simply rent them.

Hmmm. Now that I've put my thoughts down in writing, I think I'll cancel the outstanding BRs I have on order from Amazon. I already have DVDs of The Wizard of Oz and Snow White. I don't suspect I'll watch them or my other BR order of the new Star Trek movie more than once or twice - certainly not more than once a year.

Thanks WB. Thinking this over, I've changed my mind on buying new disks. I have too many already, and there's no sense in getting more. My life feels greatly simplified! Thanks for the multiple versions. They guided me toward a decision I should have made years ago.

"Please release theatrical and extended editions in one package" 2009-09-04
By Juri (Austin. TX)
I bought both on DVD and will not buy them twice again even though I would like to have the option to watch either! These movies are awesome but clearly the marketing folk are in the camp of Mordor!
