Bought the original DVD releases of Star Trek and LOTR, then upgraded to the extended versions. Sold them in 2006 in anticipation of upgrading to the BD version. After all this time, we finally have them... except they've taken a step backwards to save themselves room for another dip in a year or two. This nonsense has cured me of wanting to own a physical library... I've sold it off, got a Netflix membership, and only care to own my absolute favorites. These movies qualify as must-haves for me, but I'm not buying them until the extended versions are released.

Like most others, I suggest _waiting for the Blu-Ray extended version_ and forget this feeble attempt to grab a "few dollars more" with the standard version on Blu-Ray. The extended version is far better as most who presently own it can attest - and if you use an HDMI interface and a proper DVD player / amp combo you can "upscale" the current standard DVD format extended version to 1080P in the interim -- or (like they hope) buy it again when the extended comes out - your choice:(

Ok, I was about to pre-order this and then I realized that it had 822 one star reviews and the first one star review title I read told me why.
Basically when the movies were released on DVD it came in two flavors, Theatrical and Extended. First the Theatrical came out, what you saw in theaters then the much better, adding HOURS onto the story, Extended version came out. When the movies were shot Jackson, and the world, knew that there would be no way to really make a movie on these books and stay in the 2 hour movie time frame so the movies were shot and then cut down. The extra that they cut out added a little over an hour per movie, I think, not checking wikipedia while I write this. Even with the 3 extra hours added onto this trilogy they are in no way close to the books in content, but still really good.
Basically, I think the Extended Blu-Ray will only be like [...] bucks more when it comes out, so I would just wait. I have no idea why they do this, well, I know why, there is a sucker born every minute.

They got me on DVD, so I had to buy it twice. Now I have sold both DVD set, and waiting for BD Extended version!
